I’m sad to report that our little library has very few friends. Month after month, our tireless Friends group meets, and looks forlornly at the front doors hoping that maybe, possibly, a few more people might want to join the fold. But no one comes. This could be because the outside world is intimidated about how wonderful and productive our little group is. They might figure that the Lena group is so intelligent, self-sufficient and fun that they may not have enough to bring to the table that would make them stand out. But I am here to tell you that this is just not the case! In Lena, we tend to bring out the best in people and we know that there are several enthusiastic community members with ideas that could completely change the way Friends groups everywhere operate. Lena could take over the world if we just had your help!!! So, I beg of you, please stop by the library and join our organization. We would love to have you, and can offer up a fun environment that supports your favorite community organization—the library! We meet the first Monday of every month at 6pm.

After all the holiday buzz, its almost a relief to find things getting back to normal at the library. So now that things are moving at a much slower pace, its a great time to stop by some of the library's events in the month of January. The monthly book club will be meeting Thursday January 31st at 7pm to discuss The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.Copies are going fast, so stop by and pick one up!

You can breathe a sigh of relief young Anime fans. The library's club is coming back after a bit of a hiatus over the holidays. We have switched corporations to Operation Anime, who will be sending us a selection of our choice every month. Our next selection which will be shown on February 1st at 4:30pm. Come to the meeting and vote for what you'd like to see in March!

Are you tired of the chaos of the holiday season? Take some downtime and stop by the library. Pick out a few videos to watch with your family this season, or come look at some of our new picture books to read with the kids. If you find yourself too exhausted to do any reading, you can even bring the kids by and the librarians will do it for you! Preschool storytime runs every Friday at 10:30am. This December we have been focusing on making ornaments for our craft, and this Friday will not be any different. So if your tired and need a break, stop on by and hang out at the most serene place in town.

Thanks to all the kids that came out for the Nanowrimo pizza party. Of the original fifteen people that signed up, five people completed their novels and many more had word counts that exceeded 10,000, which is no small accomplishment! But just because November is over doesn't mean you need to stop writing. Make sure to bring your finished product to the library to get a copy printed.

Please don't forget that the library has preschool story hour every Friday at 10:30am. We always do crafts, listen to stories and have a lot of fun! Sitting quietly is not required, so bring those squirmy babies and their hurricane siblings. Our library is getting much too quiet, and we need more kids to liven up the place.
Come out to the library on November 19th at 5:30pm and meet some of the National Novel Writing month participants. Believe it or not, nearly twenty kids have signed up to write their novels in the month of November. This is addition to all of their school work and activities! So, if you see someone will a "I'm a novelist" button on, make sure to give them a hearty congratulations! It is no small endeavor to write a book!
Spotlight on Books
The library just got in a new shipment of young adult books, many of which are up for awards in 2008. Stop by and check out our display if you are a young adult or are young at heart! Many of these books are great reads with some dynamic characters. Come pick one up to enjoy now that the weather is getting cold!

Thank you to all the kids who spent their day off at the library! We had great fun dressing up like mummies, playing musical pumpkins and collecting candy down the spooky maze. Some of you even braved the edible monster fingers!! We hope to see you back next year for more scary fun!
Anime!! Anime!!! Anime!!!! Friday is our Anime club at the library. The fun starts at 4:30pm. Snacks, cute cartoons and good conversations await, so stop by the library to see what it is all about.
Spotlight on Books
Since I have just come off about six weeks of Halloween party planning, I thought I would highlight what has now become my favorite magazine. Family Fun is becoming more and more well known for its original and simple ideas for those on a budget. These ideas are great for those who don't typically have much skill in the cooking and crafting arenas. For example, I was able to make a two foot long snake cake for my son's Halloween birthday which may actually have been easier than making a cake the traditional way (the reason I can't say for sure is because I've never actually made a cake before this). The crafts are simple and cheap. In fact, I have used several ideas for library story time crafts over the last few years. And if you don't have time to read the magazine, Family Fun has a great website with a ton of ideas at familyfun.go.com. The Lena library has back issues, so if you are stumped and need some ideas, stop by and check out a few. I will see you there.

Two activities in one week, you say? The library is always bustling, so the next book club meeting will be Thursday October 25th at 7pm. We will be discussing Animal Farm. There is still an opportunity to get a copy, so stop by the library to find out more.

Come on book clubbers! We know that fall is a bustling time, but we need you for some good discussion about our latest book club choice--Animal Farm. Maybe you've already read this classic, and if so all the better! You can just come enjoy the food and conversation without having to do the work of reading the novel. If you haven't read it, there are still some copies available at the library. Your amazing librarian already has your copy reserved! Come get it in preparation for our meeting on October 25th at 7pm.

The library still has two beautiful shelving units that need to be sold. One is a very large unit that used to house our videos, and the other a small set of shelves that can be used as an end table as well. The library will take the best offer on these items which will be for sale until Friday October 5th.
Spotlight on Music and Games!
Do you know that the Lena library just started collecting both current music CDs and video games for Playstation and Xbox? They can be checked out for two to four weeks at a time, so stop by the library and check them out.

Now that school is back in session, it's time to get those preschoolers into the library! Every Friday at 10:30am the librarian reads some wonderful stories and does an easy-to-create craft project. These are the years to fill up those memory boxes with macaroni art and handprint projects! They are only young once.

Lena's book club is this week and it is not too late to pick up this month's selection, Bittersweet by Lavyrle Spencer. The library's book club meets the last Thursday of every month at 7pm.
Did you know that the Friends of the Lena Library have some big plans? Now that National Night Out has wrapped up, there are several Dairyfest activities that the group is planning. The library is still looking for help with various things including their food booth and the book sale. We are also looking for kids to walk in the parade with the library's float entry. If you want more information on joining the Friends group or volunteering for these things, give Jennifer a call at 829-5335.

The weather is getting colder, and recuperating from weekend plans is starting to be less overwhelming. So, this is the perfect time to come out to the library for craft nights. Bring in anything you are working on--sew those Halloween costumes, scrapbook those exciting summer vacations, knit some fabulous winter sweaters. We meet every second Monday of the month from 6pm-9pm. Stop by and catch up with some friends at the library!

The Nate the Great hats, magic wands and Blues Clues puppets have been made. We've read the stories, solved the crimes, watched the mystery theater and had some great treats to keep us sustained. But even though the summer library program is coming to a close, we are taking this week to check off the final reading records and give away the last of our prizes. Make sure to stop by to claim your prize before they are all gone, as this is the final week to get credit for all your hard work!

It's interesting how writers come out of the woodwork once there is a place for them to go. Our writer's club that once started very small seems to grow by one person a month. It's been several months since we've began meeting formally, so we are turning into quite a society in the making. Our members range from those who have published their work to those who are working on queries to those who write for fun when they have a few minutes. Reading or having your work critiqued is not a requirement. Our next meeting is Monday August 20th at 5:30pm. Please call with any questions.

It is rumored that Lena ’s book club has the best treats of any library program. Just ask any one of the kids at story time who sampled the ear wax flavored jellybeans. They would’ve preferred the lovely strawberry shortcake that one of our book-clubbers brought in. But instead, they got Harry Potter beans. Bad for them, but good for you! So, stop by the library this Thursday night for a wonderful snack, great discussion and some fabulous company. If you are a last minute reader like I am, we still have copies available. We start at 7pm and are looking forward to meeting some new people!
Anime fans can celebrate because the library is moving up in the technology world! The library now has access to a projector to watch our monthly movies. Our next meeting will be Friday August 3rd at 4:30pm. Come catch the last episodes of summer before you start spending your Friday nights diligently doing your homework! And speaking of hitting the books, the library has extended the summer reading prize deadline. So stop by with your reading records and grab a prize while they last. We have everything ranging from magic wands to plastic noses filled with green slime boogers. You don’t want to miss out on these, believe me. And your parents will love you for bringing them home!

We've had some very exciting story time festivities this week! The library would like to extend a thank you to A & W who brought their bear and some root beer floats for all our story time kids. We haven't seen so many people in our library since it's grand opening and it was a nice way to take a break from the hot weather.
If you are in need of something to do this summer, you can stop by any day of the week and find something going on at the library. Come by on Thursday July 26th at 7pm for some great company, snacks and to discuss our lively selection What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage. Don't forget that Mondays are hot this summer at the library with the library's craft night the second Monday of every month at 6pm and the library's writer's club the third Monday of every month at 5:30pm. The librarian also makes good coffee for these events so don't miss them!

The library will be having its monthly craft circle on Monday June 11th at 6pm. We have knitters, beaders and scrapbookers and are always looking for new people and crafts. Stop by the library and meet some great people. Lena's book club met this past Thursday, where they discussed Midwives by Chris Bohjalian. Our next selection will be So B It by Sarah Weeks. Copies can be obtained at the library. The library's book club meets the last Thursday at 7pm in the library's comfy chairs.

Stop by the library this week to register for our summer library program! The library is currently giving out reading records to be kept throughout the summer. Earn prizes and participate in fun events held at the library starting June 15th. Story times will begin at 10:30am with a story and craft and/or presenter scheduled for that day. Summer activities will kick off with a real crime scene investigation and finger printing demonstration on June 15th. Jesse from the Lena Police Department will be stopping by so bring the whole family to participate in this event. Come by the library on June 22nd to meet Duf the clown and see what mysterious things she has hiding in her Duf-fle bag. There will be lots of laughs and surprises so make sure to come check it out. Stories and crafts will follow this very special event! On June 29th, a representative from Regina’s 7 Pillars in Green Bay will be coming to discuss aura reading and photography, as well as psychic readings. Try your own psychic abilities by guessing what symbol is on the behind an overturned note card. Prizes will be given to the person who guesses the most cards!

The library would like to extend a thank you to Jennifer Brady, a local author who talked to our writer’s group about her two self published novels. Our next writer’s club group will be meeting on May 21st at 5:30pm. People of all abilities and experiences are welcome. Lena’s Anime club also met on May 4th. The group watched two episodes of Chance Pop Session, and enjoyed creating some pictures of their favorite anime stars. Even with all this going on, we were able to break our pizza and soda consuming record. Lena’s Anime club meets the first Friday of every month at 4:30pm.

Think a library morning radio show would be a big snore? Think again! The Oconto Falls and Lena librarians are conquering the air waves with their library morning show. Their next appearance will be Thursday May 3rd at 8:00am on 107.1 WOCO. Grab a cup of coffee and tune in. We promise it will be worth waking up for! The Lena book club met on Thursday and has chosen its next selection. Copies are already in, so stop by and pick up Midwives by Chris Bohjalian. There are several still available. Also, Lena’s Anime club will be meeting again on Friday May 4th at 4:30pm. Come enjoy some snacks and fabulous animated fun. The library just received a huge order of brand new books. If you are interested in some new releases stop by and peruse our large collection. They go fast, so come by while the getting is good.

The library now has its very own blog. Stop by the website at http://www.nfls.lib.wi.us/len/ and click on Library Blog. Although it is still in the beginning stages, you can still access archives of library articles, book reviews and events and programs held here at the library. It is updated frequently, so make sure to check regularly if you have a question or to check into event times. The library is also seeking out volunteer writers to do their own book reviews on the site. Contact Jennifer if you are interested in being a contributor. I would like to personally thank all of the kids that came out to the teen advisory board on Thursday. It was a scramble to find enough chairs to seat everyone packed into our board room, but the crowded conditions did nothing to squelch a great brainstorming session! It is encouraging to see so much support for the library in the young population of Lena. Please don’t forget that the Anime club will be meeting April 13th at 4:30pm. Also, the Lena bookclubbers will be having their meeting Thursday April 26th as well. It’s not too late to pick up a copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. We have plenty of copies!

The library has just put out a huge selection of hardcover kid’s picture books and easy readers. There are more on the way, so stop by to browse or take part in our weekly preschool story time on Fridays at 10:30am. April at the Lena library will be bustling with teen events. Because of the Easter weekend, the library’s Anime club has been moved this month to Friday April 13th at 4:30pm. Stop by and watch some fabulous new anime episodes. There is always food, drink and great company. The first teen advisory meeting will be held at 4pm on Thursday April 5th. Come raise your voice for library awareness and advocacy! The library’s monthly craft circle will be held on Monday April 9th at 6pm. In the past, members have brought knitting, scrap booking and beading.
